In the bike shop I found a second hand odometer of the same brand as the one that got crushed - that way I didn't have to change the cable. However, I had to ride around town for some hours to find a battery to see if it worked. It worked but didn't fit properly so I had to cable tie it - I knew it would likely cause some problems later but for AUD 10 it seemed worth a try...
