After around 600k I finally came down from the mountains - at the same time temperatures reached 25C (75F) so it was back to bicycle shorts and a t-shirt. Route 40 north changed from county road to freeway as it passed through Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. I rode 70k (45 miles) on the road and didn't realise it was a freeway until I saw this sign.
