Charante-Maritime is either one of the poorest French provinces or they don't prioritise traffic. Since I arrived with the ferry the previous evening, it had been absolutely horrendous no matter the size (main/secondary/tertiary), type (road/bike path) or location (town/countryside) - by far the worst I've experienced in France with otherwise many bad roads....
