To my great surprise, there was no road (except the highway) to La Rochelle, so I had to navigate 30k small horrendous backroads. Very tough on the bike (and my butt) and very time consuming partly because I constantly had to check my map for directions and partly because I could only do 5-10 k/h on the bad roads...
