As it turned out, a spoke had broken through the rim so my Australian "wonder wheel" was beyond repair. Riding the bad roads in Australia and many horrible roads in Asia, it had done beyond expectation, and despite the allegedly good Iranian roads, I knew I was in big trouble without it.
